Microdermabrasion products

The popularity of microdermabrasion as a treatment for a wide variety of skin conditions has led a larger growth in the microdermabrasion product industry. Today there are dozens of products available in the professional and home microdermabrasion markets. Here we explore the main microdermabrasion products available today.

Microdermabrasion machines

The microdermabrasion machine is the most expensive product in professional microdermabrasion treatment. A basic microdermabrasion product delivers microdermabrasion crystals to the skin through a tube before sucking it away again. However, dozens of products have come onto the market in recent years offering a multitude of added features. These include ultrasonic frequency transmitters and hot and cold skin treatments which are all powered by the microdermabrasion machine.

The cost of a basic machine is about $2000 although prices can go up as high as $20,000 for medical grade products. Medical grade microdermabrasion machines are stronger than spa grade machines and are used for the most severe cases of acne scarring and stretch marks.

It’s important to remember that these products should only be used by professionals who have received training on those particular machines.

Crystal free microdermabrasion products

Due to controversy over the safety of aluminium oxide crystals, crystal –free diamond microdermabrasion products have become increasingly popular. In addition to safety, these products are usually smaller and more mobile allowing for at home professional treatment.

Microdermabrasion accessory products

Microdermabrasion machines rely on several accessory products to operate. The most important of these are microdermabrasion crystals, which are not re usable and must be bought regularly.

Many crystal microdermabrasion machines also use disposable plastic tips which come into contact with the skin. These products are cheap and usually ordered in mass quantities by microdermabrasion treatment providers.

There are several other microdermabrasion products that can be bought separately from the machine. These include tubing, crystal cartridges and microdermabrasion wands. See our page on microdermabrasion equipment for more information.

Home microdermabrasion products

The home microdermabrasion kit industry has grown enormously in recent years with most major cosmetics companies launching their own microdermabrasion products. The major appeal of home microdermabrasion products is that they provide exfoliation through using microdermabrasion crystals, while being more convenient and cheaper.

Home microdermabrasion kits

A typical home microdermabrasion kit consists of four products:

  • Microdermabrasion cream
  • Foam applicator
  • Hand piece
  • Post treatment serum

Opinions on the effectiveness of home microdermabrasion systems vary. Some swear by the results obtained, while others claim that far from improving skin it makes it worse. Because this is a consumer industry there is a lot of variance in product quality and thorough research is advised before purchasing home microdermabrasion products.

Microdermabrasion creams

Microdermabrasion creams are an easier alternative to home kit products. The cream is simply massaged into the skin with fingers to obtain exfoliation results.

Microdermabrasion cloths

Microdermabrasion cloths are the cheapest and most simple products on the market. Although not as scientific as other microdermabrasion products, microdermabrasion cloths can produce excellent skin improvements if incorporated as part of an overall skin care program over a prolonged period.
